Jammu and Kashmir Forensic Science Laboratory with its headquarters at Jammu was created in the year 1964 vide Govt. Order No. Police-81/64 dated 02.04.1964, an organization under the control of the Police Department. This arrangement continued till August-2019 when its overall control was shifted to Home Department vide order No. 189-Home of 2020 dated 14.09.2020. The FSL has two complexes- one at Bikram Chowk, Jammu and the other at Bemina, Srinagar where from it operates. The staff strength of FSL was enhanced from time to time in consonance with the increase in the number of cases and introduction of newer disciplines. Its services are also availed by other agencies such as, Banks, State Investigation Agency, and the judiciary. The reports of FSL are admissible under Section 293 of Cr.P.C.
